Healthy Food Procurement in American Cities assesses the nation’s 40 largest cities on whether the city has nutrition standards in place, and what percentage of foods and beverages sold on city property abide by those nutrition standards. Through this assessment, cities are awarded a gold, silver, bronze, or no medal.
Strong healthy food procurement policies ensure that healthy options are available in city-owned or controlled places such as parks, sports arenas, city buildings, airports, and public hospitals. These policies aid residents in making smart decisions that will help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight and help cities combat rising obesity rates.
